Alvin Merle Baylor, age 86 of Stockton, IL, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the Lena Living Center in Lena, IL. He was born July 6, 1925 in Stockton, the son of John and Susie (Morgan) Baylor. He was a 1943 graduate of Stockton High School, and attended Oberlin College in Ohio. Merle served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific on the USS Mississippi as an electrician. He married Rita Yohn on August 28, 1948 in Warren, IL. After returning from the service, Merle worked for Henny Motor Coach and studied under the GI Bill. He also worked as an electrician and plumber for Long Electric in Warren. He was a progressive farmer his entire life. His memberships include the Stockton VFW, the Stockton American Legion, and the Farm Bureau. Merle enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating at Blanding's Landing, playing cards, and history, especially history of WWII. He had a passion for aviation and for discussing politics. Merle is survived by his wife Rita; two daughters, Nancy (David) Takashima of Mokena, IL, and Karen Sirgany of Stockton; son John Baylor of San Jose, CA; and four grandchildren, Amy (Glenn) Takashima Schuster, Emily Takashima, Sarah Sirgany, and Adam Sirgany. He is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Calvin Earl; brother, Clyde LaVerne; and infant sister, Erma. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 11:00AM, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Stockton, Father Smith presiding. There will be a one hour visitation before the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Stockton. A memorial fund has been established.
