Obituary

Catherine J. "Cathy" Brandenburg passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2026 in Freeport, Illinois.  Born on May 26, 1949 to Leland "Bud" and Hazel Pierce.  Cathy lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to her family, work and community.

She was the proud mother of two daughters, JoLynn (Kevin) Kuhl and Dana (Roy) Probus.  Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Alex (Stephanie) Kuhl, Morgan (Chris) Geier, Evan (Megan) Kuhl, CJ (Casey Hollibaugh) Probus, and Raegan Probus. She was blessed with great-grandchildren Dallas Geier, Colton Probus, Collins Probus, Violet Kuhl, Conor Kuhl, Lincoln Geier and Chatham Probus.

Cathy is also remembered by her sisters Sharen (Mark) Mellicker and Connie Finn (Lisa Metcalf), sister-in-law Becky Pierce and five nieces and nephews.

In later years, she shared companionship with her partner Tom Brobst and faithful Yorkie, Abby.  Together they created a life filled with laughter and adventure.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Hazel Pierce, and her brothers Dan and Gary Pierce.

Professionally, Cathy devoted over 38 years to Northwest Eyecare in Stockton and Freeport.  Her dedication earned the respect of colleagues and patients alike.  She also volunteered as an EMT for the Stockton Ambulance for several years, reflecting her deep commitment to helping others and community.

She found joy in bowling with The Motorettes team in Stockton alongside her mom, aunts, cousins and friends.  In quieter moments, she enjoyed puzzles and reading—pursuits that reflected her love of curiosity, knowledge and problem-solving.  Her love of travel and warmer weather took her traveling with her family and Tom.

Known for her sharp wit and sometimes unfiltered humor, Cathy brought energy to every gathering.  Her remarkable memory for names and dates made her the keeper of family memories across generations.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at the Stockton Park House from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

May Cathy's memory bring comfort—and perhaps a smile—to all who knew and loved her.
