Charles Gilbert Glenn, born Sept. 13, 1916, passed away in Sierra Vista, Arizona, on May 1st, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Willis G. Glenn and Richard W. Glenn. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Phyllis Corcoran Glenn. They were married in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1940. He is affectionately remembered by his children: Charles E. Glenn, (Margaret;) Mary Kay Eiermann, (Robert ;) and Frederick J. Glenn, (Claire ;) grandchildren: Mary Anna and Bennet Eiermann, Bradley, Keith, Megan, Jay and Mark Glenn, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with seven great grandchildren. Charles was born in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1934, and went on to earn a business degree from the University of Iowa in 1939. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a plank owner and officer on board the USS Wallace L. Lind, DD703, a destroyer commissioned to the South Pacific. His was one of the ships monitoring the signing of the Japanese instrument of surrender. He led an active and vibrant life, starting his own insurance agency, the Chas. G. Glenn Co., Inc., Elmhurst, Illinois, with his wife. He made friends wherever he went. He was not an ordinary man. A memorial service for the family will be held in Shannon, Illinois, June 3, 2013.
