Dorothy M. (Broeker) Bruns, 89, was called Home on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Dorothy truly enjoyed her family and friends. She always had a smile and a hug to share and wanted to help others in whatever way she could. She was blessed with the ability to make friends and treasured each and every friendship she had. She has been a blessing to many and will be lovingly missed. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards and would take the opportunity to do so whenever she had a chance. She treasured time spent with her family. Dorothy was a devout Christian and hoped that others knew the Lord the way that she knew Him. Dorothy was the daughter of John and Anna (Schultz) Broeker, born on May 5, 1922 in Nebraska. She grew up in the Fremont, Nebraska area. On July 3, 1941 she married Glenn H. Bruns in Marysville, Missouri. Glenn and Dorothy owned and operated Red and Dot's Place in Afton, Iowa from 1951 to 1958.They also ran a shoe store in Afton before moving to Sterling, IL in 1959, where they farmed. In 1960 Glenn and Dorothy and their family moved to the Kent area where they farmed. Dorothy was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in Lena. While living in the Sterling area, Glenn and Dorothy were members of Christ Our Savior Church, where they were founding members of the 'ALIVEgroup. Dorothy was a member of the Lutheran Women's Ministry League and the Ladies Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy worked at Newell Company and Farm & Fleet in the early 1960's. In the 1970's she was a school secretary for the Pearl City School District. She also worked for the United States Post Office doing various jobs throughout the twenty years of service. Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Judith A. Witt, Dixon, Glenda (Roger) Sneek, Sr., Shannon, and Jill (Dennis) Williams, Freeport. Her grandchildren, Jeff Sneek, Roger (Barb) Sneek Jr., and Michelle Sneek, all of Shannon. John Witt, Yuma, AZ and Dan (Renee) Witt of Mt. Prospect, Jacob (Amanda) Williams, of Chicago. Dorothy's great grandchildren, Jessica, Brian, Grace and Evan Sneek, Kayla Barrett, Sierra and Gavin Witt and Nathan Witt. She is also survived by one nephew, James (Ruth) Clapper Jr., of Elgin. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Glenn on January 1, 2005, her brother Clarence Broeker and sister, Marie Clapper. Our family would like to thank Sharon Ackerman and staff for the wonderful care and love they've given mom over the past few months. We will forever be grateful. A special thank you to the FHN Hospice staff for guidance and assistance and to Oakely Courts for the care Mom was given during her stay there. Thank you to Pastor Bader and her friends from St. John's for their continued visits to mom, she enjoyed the time she spent with each of you so very much. A visitation will be held Tuesday May 31, 2011 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Hermann Funeral Home in Pearl City, IL. The funeral service will be Wednesday June 1, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena, IL, the Rev. Rick Bader presiding. The burial will take place at Ioof Cemetery in Rock Falls, IL. A memorial fund has been established.
