Freda Weis died unexpectedly of natural causes at her longtime Schapville home sometime after January 9th, discovered by a good friend on January 11th.

Freda was a unique soul, gregarious and outspoken, loving and loved by many.

Freda graduated from Galena High School in 1975, served 7 years in the United States Air Force, walked in a peace march as a political activist, and settled down to raise chickens, goats, and children at her Schapville homestead.  She was an avid gardener, socially engaged in her community, active in local play production, a supporter of the arts and social justice.  She worked for the United States Postal Service for many years, retiring from her postmaster position in 2007.  In her semi-retirement she worked at Fergedaboudit Vineyard and Winery, was active with the Lions club, and spent time traveling with her beloved dogs.

Freda is survived by her parents Fred and Jane Weis of Belen, NM; her children Dominic Weis-Sickler of Potosi, WI, Mira Jolliff of Gypsum, CO, and Rain Weis-Sickler of Galena, IL; her grandchildren Rosa and Fay Jolliff of Gypsum, CO; her siblings Steven Weis of Albuquerque, NM, Daniel Weis of Carbondale, CO, and Selma Dodson of Belen, NM; and many extended family and friends who will all miss her free spirit dearly.

To honor Freda's COVID-concious values, a celebration of life is tentatively being planned for August 2022.
