Gladys M. Appel
, age 90 of Shannon, IL, passed away Friday, January 22, 2016 at Manor Court in Freeport, IL. She was born January 2, 1926 in rural Shannon in Ogle County; the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Pearl L. (Martin) Miller. She married Leonard H. Appel on March 9, 1968 in Shannon; he died December 21, 1980.
Gladys was a graduate of Shannon High School class of 1944 and then went on to attend Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing of which she graduated from in 1947. She was employed as an operating room nurse by Deaconess Hospital for 13 years and 8 1/2 years at Northwestern Hospital of Chicago, IL. Gladys was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Shannon and a member of American Legion Auxiliary 0379 Boyle Hoy Post of Shannon.
She is survived by her step-son, Keith L. Appel of rural Forreston, IL; nephew Eric (Cheryl) Miller; great nieces Megan of Crystal Lake, IL and Jordan and great nephew Logan Miller both of Shannon. Preceded in death by her brother Raymond (late Donna) Miller.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 29th, 2016 from 9:00AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00AM at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon. Interment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, IL. A memorial fund has been established.
