James Francis Mantle
was born on January 2, 1930 in Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees, and County Durham, England. He was the son of Minnie (Todd) and Arthur Mantle. He passed away on December 27, 2015 in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois, of heart failure.
He married May Kelsey. They had a son, Colin, who died as an infant; and two daughters, along with 5 grandchildren.
He married Mary LaShelle on December 14, 1980 in Torrance, California. He had 3 step-daughters and 13 grandchildren.
He served as the President of the Fun Birds of Southern California (a Thunderbird club, he owned a 1963 Thunderbird). He also served as the President of the South Bay Aerospace division of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in Los Angeles, California.
He was a manufacturing engineer for Northrup in Hawthorne, California and worked on the F16 Fighter jets as well as Air Force One and the Stealth Bomber. After his retirement, he moved to Shannon, Illinois where he served two terms as the Village President.
He enjoyed soccer; fishing with his grandson; drinking coffee with his granddaughters; golfing with his son-in-law, Jeff; and car shows with his wife, Mary.
He is preceded in death by his parents, son Colin and son-in-law Jeff Whitney.
He is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Chris and Angela, step-daughters Marcy, Wendy and Jennifer and his loving grandchildren Alex, Jill, Troy, Melissa and Karah.
Cremation rites will be accorded and a memorial service and celebration of his life will he held Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Bethel UMC in Shannon at 11:30 am.
