Joanne Lanette Heckman
, age 52, of Freeport (formerly of Shannon) passed away on Friday, April 3, 2015, at her home. Joanne was born June 11, 1962, in Dixon to Marvin and Carol (Unangst) Martz. She graduated from Lanark High School in 1980.
She had a lot of love in her heart and she was loved by many. She treasured her children and her grandchildren and always said, "raising my children were the best years of my life." She enjoyed working hand in hand with her children on house projects to personalize their homes including painting, decorating, organizing, and putting up elaborate Christmas lights. Her hobbies included crocheting baby blankets, soaking in the sunrays, playing cards and attending her grandson's sporting events.
She was employed at Wal-Mart for 24 years, owned Martz Insurance Agency, served on the Board of Directors for Forreston Mutual, and was a realtor with Preferred Real Estate.
Joanne will be greatly missed by her three children, daughter, Cara (Joe) Olson, East Moline; son, Craig (Chelsey) Heckman, Shannon; daughter, Calli Jo (Michael) Berago, Streamwood; and her five grandsons Carson, Cavin, and Cruz Heckman, Malakai Berago, and Tyler Olson. Other surviving family members include her mother Carol (Unangst) Martz; two brothers Jerry (Linda) Martz of Byron and Jeff Martz of Lanark; two sisters Judy (Ray) Baldwin of Freeport and Janice (Kirk) Nielsen of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Martz, and her grandparents.
Services will be at 10:00 am Friday, April 10, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Shannon, with Pastor Glen Williamson and Rev. Steve Aram officiating. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Freeport. Visitation will be 4-7 pm on Thursday, April 9, at Hermann Funeral Home, Shannon. A memorial fund has been established in her memory.
