Obituary

Major Lloyd Bergeman, age 91 of Stockton, IL, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Presence St. Joseph in Freeport, IL. He was born February 22, 1924, the son of the late Benjamin and Nora (Gates) Bergeman. He was a lifelong resident of Berreman Township and the Willow area. He attended the Union Grade School and graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1941 where he participated in FFA, football, and track.

On June 7, 1948, Major and Eleanor June (Broshous) were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. They were married 57 years. Eleanor died on September 30, 2005. He was a livestock and dairy farmer and took over the family farm following his father's death in 1944 along with his twin brother, Roger who died October 22, 2000. In 1993, Major won JoDaviess County Conservation Farmer of the Year. He was a lifelong member of Willow-Kent United Methodist Church and had extended church family at Damascus Outpouring. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and photographed images of crosses he found in nature.

Major had a great vitality for life and was an avid outdoors man, enjoying hunting all the species of wildlife the farm had to offer: small game, coon, fox, coyote, deer, and in later years, turkey. He had a great memory and loved telling stories of his adventures with his hunting dogs and growing up during the Great Depression. He also enjoyed taking care of animals, fishing, gardening, sowing oats, and maintaining blue bird houses. Most of all, Major loved spending time with his family and had a great love and concern for his grandchildren. He was a kind hard working man who had a positive attitude and physical toughness that enabled him to live a long and happy life.

He is survived by his children, Bradley (Julie) Bergeman of Stockton, Brenda Calvert of Hayward, CA, Barbara (Mark) Hessenius of Freeport, IL, and Barry (Luann) Bergeman of Stockton; and grandchildren, Kristen (John) Calvert-Chavez, Steven "Hunter" Hessenius, Ashley Getz, Katie Anne (Zachary Jankowski) Hessenius, Caleb Bergeman, and Jared Bergeman. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanor; sister, Phyllis Buss; and brother, Roger Bergeman.

The funeral service will be held Friday, January 22nd at 11:00 am at the Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton; Pastor Brenda Morris presiding. There will be a visitation before the service beginning at 9:00 am. Interment will take place at Morseville Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
