Norman D. Vanderheyden, age 89 of Stockton, IL, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Stockton Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. He was born December 7, 1923, the son of George and Orla (Tiffany) Vanderheyden. He graduated from Stockton High School in 1941, where he enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. Norman married Maxine "Mickey" Potter on November 6, 1949 in Hanover, IL.
Norman was a past member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Stockton, the Stockton Lions Club, and the Stockton Heritage League. He has been Plant Superintendent at Atwood Automotive; he retired in 1982 after 24 years. He enjoyed horseback riding, wood working, and singing; he sang for many weddings and funerals. He loved spending time with his family
Norman is survived by his wife Mickey; three daughters, Debby (Jim) Sullivan of Stockton, Vicki (Terry) Herbig of Stockton, and Carol (Bill) Taufmann of Arlington, IN; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian) Gilmore of Nashotah, WI, Aaron (Debbie) Sullivan of Stockton, Tracy (Dan) Townsend of Pearl City, IL, Trey (Tracy) Taufmann of Vidalia, GA, Tim (Jenifer) Taufmann of Dayton, OH, and Eric Herbig of Gilbert, AL; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; his sister, Dorothy Osterday of Stockton; and his brother Don (Pat) Vanderheyden of Freeport, IL.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Dale Edward Vanderheyden; grandson, Todd Herbig; three sisters, Joyce Fox, Bess Vanderheyden, and Ruth (Allen) Schubert; brother Mason (June) Vanderheyden; and brother-in-law, Lyle Osterday.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Wesley United Methodist Church in Stockton. There will be a one hour visitation before the service beginning at 1:00 PM. Internment will take place at Ladies Union Cemetery in Stockton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Wesley United Methodist Church and Stockton Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.
